I like desserts with 'dessert' in the name. It just seems really upfront and honest. It's not trying to get away with anything.
It's basically the opposite of Frog Eye Salad which is not a salad, nor does it have frog eyes in it.
Cherry Dessert was something that we ate a lot of growing up in the Midwest. So, you know it's good.
It's good in only the way that Midwestern food can be. There are no claims that it's good for you or low-fat. And, for good measure, it's made in a casserole dish.
If we wanted to get even more transparent about this dessert, we could call it graham-cracker-crust-whipped-cream-cream cheese-and-cherries dessert. But that gets a little long, IMO.
So, 'Cherry Dessert' it is!
CHERRY DESSERT
For the crust:
1/4 lb. butter
1/2 c. sugar
20 graham cracker halves, made into crumbs
Layer 1:
8 oz. cream cheese
1 c. powdered sugar
Layer 2:
1 envelope Dream Whip
Layer 3:
1 can cherries
1. Melt butter in a medium mixing bowl. Mix in sugar and graham cracker crumbs. Press into the bottom of a casserole dish. Bake at 325˚ for 8-10 minutes. Set aside.
2. While crust is cooking, beat together cream cheese and powdered sugar until well-combined.
3. Also, as the crust is cooking, prepare Dream Whip according to package instructions.
4. When the crust is still warm (not hot), spread cream cheese gently over the crust so it doesn't tear.
5. Drop in large dollops, the Dream Whip on top of the cream cheese layer then gently push around with a spatula and spread evenly.
6. For the cherry layer, repeat the same method of dropping spoonfuls around the dessert then gently spread outward to keep the layers from mixing together too much.
WOW! My family has been making this for years, also. We got the recipe from a church cookbook from my husband's hometown, Woodbury, PA. I've never seen it in print before in except that cookbook! It really is oh-so-good!

DeleteI wouldn't recommend using Cool Whip, Jaclyn. It's not the same consistency as the Dream Whip or the cream cheese mixture. It's also probably too sweet with Cool Whip. -Sarah

What's Dream Whip? I can not wait to try!
ReplyDeleteDream Whip comes in a box in the baking aisle at your grocery store. It's kind of an instant whipped cream but a little fluffier and not quite as sweet. If you made homemade whipped cream, I'm sure it would be even better!
DeleteI have used cool whip in this dessert. I blend it onto the cream cheese mixture after it is whipped. It makes for a lighter texture. We like to top it with raspberries and danish dessert... or chocolate pudding.
